My Formula for Health and Well Being:: Body Ami and Yoga
As we approach Thanksgiving, gyms are filled with athletes working to burn off as many calories as they can before they feast on turkey and accoutrements. But exercise is rarely rote physical movement. Take Yoga. It's exercise. But it also a philosophy, a science and an art.
Many think of yoga as choreographed stretching but that simplification does not do it justice. The practice of postures (asanas) strengthens the body, creating a feeling of well being. But making the shapes of the postures is the physical part. Also required is understanding and implementing the finer details to develop complete involvement. Asanas need to be practiced with self discipline and fervor (tapas) in order to achieve maximum benefit.
According to Shyam Mehta, a practitioner of Iyengar Yoga, the moral and spiritual benefits of yoga outweigh the physical. "My Yoga practice has given me determination and the ability to accept the ups and downs of life with an equal mind. It gives me the direction for improvement--how to become more human, understanding, tolerant, and ethical. I can stand back and question my life and yet provide the steady influence required for a stable home life and a successful career." (Source: Yoga: The Iyengar Way)
And of course, remember to drink Body Ami before heading out to the gym.
